Hey, podcast fans!  PCC's in-house Certified Pediatrics Coder and pediatric services consultant, Jan Blanchard, gave a great webinar last week and I thought I'd share it here.  There's a PDF presentation attached to the episode you'll want to grab, too.

The topic?  Seven pediatric services our clients have proven to annually generate $55,000+ per practitioner.  For real!

In this episode, I spend time basking in the sun of Dr. Todd Wolynn, pediatrician and CEO at Kids Plus Pediatrics in Pittsburgh, PA.

I can talk to Dr. Wolynn for hours, but we tried hard to focus - and largely succeeded - on how to even get started on the idea of making significant change in your practice.  KPP, you see, is arguably the most progressive, evolutionary, and with-it pediatric practice in the country.  You can see the details below.  But when I talk to or about Dr. Wolynn, I see some people tune it out because they think, "I can never do that!"  Dr. Wolynn will explain that you HAVE to do whatever "that" is - and the sooner, the better.

Some background about KPP and Dr. Wolynn:

Kids Plus Pediatrics is a fiercely independent, nationally-renowned pediatric practice.  They are advocates, educators, supporters and entertainers of kids and their families in the region.

They won the Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award in 2016 for the W.PA/WV region. Kids Plus is proud to have earned the Pittsburgh Post Gazette Top Workplace Award six of the past seven years -based on anonymous employee voting. They’ve presented at the CDC, at the American Cancer Society Headquarters, and at International Vaccine Confidence Conferences in Austria and France - all within 2018.

They are collaborating with: BioPharma, the Child Television Production Industry, Social Media researchers, and with academic programs like Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) and the University of Pittsburgh to share our expertise in health communication, social media, Early Childhood Care and Learning, and more.

Dr. Wolynn Bio:
Dr. Todd Wolynn is President, CEO, and co-owner of Kids Plus Pediatrics — a cutting edge, independent practice in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. He also serves as Chief Executive Director of the nationally renowned Breastfeeding Center of Pittsburgh, and as CEO of the National Breastfeeding Center. An active member and fellow of the American Academy of Pediatrics, Dr. Wolynn is a nationally recognized expert on pediatric sleep, breastfeeding, immunization, practice management, and the use of social media in pediatrics.

Many of you have heard me give the "Patient Recall Strategies" talk.  It may be my most popular and effective presentation.  I even identified the lack of preventive care focus as the #1 Business Mistake That Pediatricians Make

But there is still more to say about this subject.  I realized that both "halves" of this talk - the WHY and the HOW - needed updating and additional content, so I split them up.  Here is the first half to help remind pediatricians WHY preventive care is so important.  I've got new data, new angles, new jokes.  If youv'e heard me give the "patient recall" course before, this is just the first half, on steroids.  Unless you're already a champion - there are a few of you, though not many - tune in.

I'll be back in November with the second half of the story and a big update to the secrets of a good patient recall program.  Nestled in between these episodes will be an awesome interview with Dr. Todd Wolynn!

  • how to stop practicing in a silo
  • the industry events you need to know about
  • how to update your look and feel
Jul 11, 2018

The second in our drill down into the biggest mistakes that pediatricians make, we're going to discuss:

  • measures and benchmarks every pediatric practice should know
  • how to avoid classic financial report mistakes
  • ways to adopt a consistent management To-Do list
  • how to leverage Evidence-Based Practice Management

Jul 11, 2018

The first in our drill down into the biggest mistakes that pediatricians make, we're going to discuss the lack of preventive care focus.  Among the topics I'll cover:

  • the impact a proper preventive care program will have on your practice

  • real life tips and tricks to improve your clinical response and financial impact

Last year, I was working with our marketing people to focus on our clients' "pain points."  They asked me, "What problems and mistakes do you see the most often in the offices you visit?"  I went into a rant and started writing things on a white board to keep it all organized.  When the pen ran out of ink, I took a step back and realized...hey, this is important stuff.

Since then, I've had the chance to deliver a seminar with the title above: The Five Biggest Business Mistakes Pediatricians Make - Free Seminar.  In each instance, I've had about 45 minutes to cover all the content and take questions.  Now we want to take it to the next level!

In a series of free, on-line webinars, we presented this topic, and then I dug deeply into each of the individual topics.  For example, when I cover "Get out of your office!" or "Do Your Homework" I'm not just going to toss out a few thoughts and move on, I'm going to spend some real time with examples and practical advice.

In this episode, I spend a little under 20 minutes describing 5 things every pediatric practice should consider before purchasing an EHR.  If you're a PCC client already, sure - maybe this is old news.  But if you are a pediatrician, even if you're never going to consider PCC, spend 17 minutes and get an insider's view of what the important features of a pediatric EHR are - my answers will surprise you, I promise.

During the podcast, I refer to PCC's productivity calculator - it's a free on-line tool we developed to let any physician - not just PCC clients, not just pediatricians! - calculate the impact of an EHR on productivity.  A few days after we recorded this podcast, we updated our WWW site, so the location has actually changed!  You can find the productivity calculator here.

I'll be back shortly, promise!
